In May of 2018, Radix Theatre sent out a press release:
A message for future Vancouverites:
Theatre company imagines rising waters
Radix Theatre investigates the future with Waterfront, a project about sea level rise in Vancouver. Conceived by Radix Associate Andreas Kahre, Waterfront will have participants discussing the geographic, social and political consequences of future sea level rise in a curious, provocative way on the shorelines of False Creek, Sunday afternoons from June 10 – July 8. The project is free and open to the public.
Equipped with beach chairs and an app that indicates sea level, Waterfront participants will travel in groups around False Creek exploring areas expected to be inundated as ocean levels rise due to climate change by 2100. The City of Vancouver is predicting a 1-metre rise by that year, while UNESCO, among other organizations are predicting up to 10 meters. Waterfront participants will trace these potential future shorelines in flash mob-style ‘beach parties’ designed to generate interactions between participants, homeowners, and passers-by.
Everyone will be invited to write message to the future that will be included with our photo and video documentation and stored with Vancouver City Archives. Radix will also place material in a stainless steel time capsule, to be opened in the year 2118, and a set of QR code plaques will be placed at the sites we visited.
Everyone is welcome to join the event, no experience is necessary. Radix is interested in engaging with any Vancouver citizen, creating dialogue about the subject and sending a message to the future. Your participation is welcomed. You can meet the company in the lobbies of these community centres on Sundays from June 10 – July 8, beginning at 1pm. Dress for the weather, the event will last a couple of hours.

The company has created many ambitious performances over the years incorporating dynamic physicality, seductive visual design, and provocative content to address such issues as environmental degradation, car culture, and sexual health. Far-ranging performance locations have included an inner-city field, a tour bus, a diner, a downtown office building, a parking lot with audience members in their cars, and IKEA.
